Expand mental health services for veterans. Many veterans suffer from trauma and mental health issues stemming from their service. The suicide rate among veterans in Colorado is significantly higher than both the national average and the general population. By ensuring consistent and reliable funding for mental health care, this initiative helps veterans receive the necessary support to heal and improve their overall well-being. Supporting our veterans is not just an obligation but a moral imperative.
The mental health crisis for youth has skyrocketed in recent years. This measure will help youth heal from trauma by increasing access to mental health services for at-risk youth. This measure will also support school safety and gun violence prevention programs to create a safer educational environment, protect students and staff, and foster a secure learning atmosphere. When we invest in the well-being of our youth, we invest in the future stability and prosperity of our state.
Despite rising rates and more violent cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and human trafficking in Colorado, funding to support victims has dropped more than 50% since 2018. Currently, there is no state funding source for victim services, and federal funding continues to decrease each year. Without proper support, victims face long-term physical and mental health issues, homelessness, and re-victimization.
This measure will raise desperately needed funding by placing a modest excise tax on guns, precursor parts, and ammunition sold by dealers and manufacturers in Colorado.
